Drill cuttings are a common byproduct of oil and gas well drilling. This cuttings are then brought to the surface in the drilling fluid that rises from the drill bit. The cuttings must be separated so that the fluid can be reused. The cuttings are typically stored in a vacuum tank before being transported to a suitable disposal facility. Oil rigs in Italy know well how often their low temperatures cause these vacuum tanks to freeze, making proper disposal difficult.

MagTech’s solution is a self-contained, heated, and portable vacuum slurry container made of low-temperature steel. Its design also allows for stacking, allowing for longer storage times. The steel used to construct the tank maintains its strength at low temperatures, ensuring it doesn’t become brittle during transport. Specifically, they chose steels with a ductile-brittle transition temperature below -50 degrees Celsius.
